When Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History week in 1926, he realized the importance of providing a theme to focus the attention of the public. Today, the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History (ASALH), founded by Dr. Woodson in 1915, continues to set themes for Black History Month.
