158 Years of Freedom

On June 19, 2023, the day officially recognized as Juneteenth (also called Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and African-American Independence Day), we will mark 158 years since the end of the legal institution of human chattel slavery.

As a result of Juneteenth becoming a national holiday in the United States three years ago, many people around the country will participate in Juneteenth celebrations. But it is also important to recognize that there are other people who would rather we forget the reason that Juneteenth exists.

We live in a time and in a place where highly coordinated groups, who have power, control, and influence over systems of education and information, are actively erasing evidence of the 246-year existence (1619 - 1865) of the legal institution of human chattel slavery, comprising the enslavement primarily of Africans and African-Americans, as well as the 100 years (1865 - 1965) of Jim Crow laws that followed. 

These groups are engaged in anti-intellectual and anti-academic activities, such as book banning, removing factual information about human chattel slavery from curriculums, excluding the AP African-American Studies course from schools, threatening teachers and librarians, and defunding diversity, equity, and inclusion programming.
